1. The Louvre:
The Louvre is unquestionably the best and most important museum in the world, and the Louvre Museum is also the number one tourist destination in Paris. The museum houses over 460,000 works of art from all around the world, representing many cultures and religions. It is an incredible experience to walk this museum’s expansive rooms as you take in such a vast amount of artwork. You will find paintings by Raphael, Monet, Degas and other greats. The Louvre Museum also includes busts of historical figures like Socrates, Julius Caesar and King Louis XV. This helps to put their work into a more personal context.
As a tourist, there are certain things you should do when visiting the Louvre Museum. Make sure to pick up a map at the entrance so you can plan your route and make the most of your time. There are also audio guides available in many languages, which can be a great way to learn more about the paintings and busts you are seeing. If you are short on time, make sure to see the Mona Lisa, the Venus de Milo, and the Winged Victory of Samothrace. These are some of the most famous and well-known pieces in the museum.
2. Notre-Dame de Paris:
A beautiful Gothic cathedral sits on the banks of the River Seine in Paris. It was originally intended to be much taller, but due to design flaws, it was never completed above ground level. Still, Notre Dame is one of Paris’s major landmarks and is well worth a visit. The highlight is the 13th century stained glass windows, which are one of the finest collections in all of Europe.
Notre-Dame de Paris is often associated with myth and legend such as the story that during Napoleon’s exile, he planned to blow up the cathedral to prevent it from becoming a site for celebrating his death (he didn’t).
If you want to get a taste of Parisian culture, Notre Dame is the best place to go! The church was built in 1163 and has survived revolutions, bombings and even natural disasters
3. The Eiffel Tower:
The Eiffel Tower is one of the most recognizable landmarks in the world. When you visit the city, you can’t miss it- it’s one of the tallest structures in Paris. You can reach it by taking metro line 6 to Bir-Hakeim, or RER C to Champ de Mars-Tour Eiffel. From there, take the elevator out to the esplanade level and enjoy panoramic views of Paris. The Eiffel Tower has observatory decks that you can visit for a fee, if you want to avoid crowds, make sure to reserve tickets in advance! The tower also offers guided tours where you can learn more about the history and construction of this iconic structure.
4. The Basilica of the Sacred Heart:
The Basilica of the Sacred Heart is a grand Catholic church sitting on a hill near the Ladurée shop It was built by architect Paul Abadie as a tribute to those who died during the Franco-Prussian War, many of whom were Catholics.
Today, services are organized for the different religions every day except Sunday! It has been there since 1919 and it is open every day from Monday to Saturday from 7 am to 7 pm. The bell towers, which are adjacent to the basilica, hold four bells that weigh up to 12 tons each. You can climb them for a fee if you reach before 10 am.
5. The Arc de Triomphe:
The Arc de Triomphe is one of the most recognizable monuments in the world. It was designed to commemorate those who died during the French Revolution. It is modeled after the Roman Arch of Titus and it was built to commemorate Napoleon’s victory at Austerlitz.
Today, you can climb to the top of the arch to have a breathtaking view of all of Paris. You won’t regret taking this photo opportunity!
The Arc de Triomphe has become so iconic that it has even featured prominently in some Hollywood movies – but if you watch them pay attention to what happens at night …;)
